CUTCOMBE & DISTRICT YOUNG FARMERS CLUB (Yearbook Report 2007) ~ Sadie Parfitt
This year started, as usual, with the club's Annual Field Day. It was held at South Quarme Farm by kind permission of the Rawle family. Natalie Rawle won the Junior Cup and Tom Burge the Senior Cup.
Our local village hall went through some major renovations this year. Tom Burge, Natalie Rawle and myself were lucky enough to be invited to the Grand Opening which was done by the Earl of Wessex, Prince Edward. This gave us the opportunity to discuss what we had been up to within the club and also some general agricultural issues.
We have been busy with social events this year; we've been bowling, to the cinema, skittles, discos, balls and these have all helped the club to bond!
Some of our members also attended SWA and National weekends where a great time was had by all.
The club held a Christmas Disco at Brendon Village Hall; Robin came dressed as a Christmas tree - he actually strapped a tree to his back and we were sweeping up pine needles until 4am in the morning!
We have raised £260 for CLOWNS through 2 nights of carol-singing. It was a poor turnout from members but those that did make it were spoilt with mulled wine and mince pies.
Cutcombe has had some successful competitions this year. Ridian Willford came 3rd in the West Group Hedging, Jono Woollacott came 1st in the West Group Shearing and also the biggest proudest success was the Fence Erecting Competition. The team consisted of Tom Burge, Craig Rawle and Ridian Willford, they came 1st at the County Rally and at the South-West Area Competitions Day and went onto represent the South-West Area in the National Finals held at the Royal Show where they came 2nd. They were beaten by the Welsh so this means we have the best fencing team in England!
The club was out in force at the County Rally; Ridian Willford won the Rabbit Skinning and came 2nd in the Shearing. Also West Group Ladies won the Tug-of-War competition.
The evening do was enjoyed by all except Jeremy, who, after spending an hour putting up his tent/marquee had to take it down again and move it to a different field on the say-so of the County Chairman. I'm sure he felt very guilty!!
As we rapidly moved into the summer we were planning our Annual Sheep Show and Sale, unfortunately due to the recent Foot and Mouth outbreaks we have not been able to go ahead with this.
Finally I would like to thank everyone who has helped Tom and myself over the past year and we would both like to wish next year's committee all the best.
CUTCOMBE & DISTRICT YOUNG FARMERS CLUB (Yearbook Report 2005)
Back in the summer the club had a 24-hour shearathon, which raised £1200 for Cancer Research. The Club would like to thank all those involved especially the Elston Family at the Old Berry Farm, Dulverton, W&M Horner for donating the shearing equipment and Dave Takle for his shearing instruction.
All too soon it was AGM time, all posts were filled despite members being away at college.
The first event of the year was the Club's Annual Sheep Show and Sale arranged by our Advisory Members.
Congratulations to Ridian Wilford for winning Champion and Ben Evans for winning Reserve Champion. This year the Club decided to enter a float at Dulverton Carnival, it certainly caused a lot of different reactions because we did the Hunt demonstration at London.
The next day was the Club's Annual Field Day hosted by Mr & Mrs Burge at Oaremead Farm, Oare.
Congratulations to Stephanie Elston for winning the Senior Cup and Natalie Rawle for winning the Junior Cup and the Stock-judging. Cutcombe members joined forces with other members of West Group who came 2nd at the County Stock-judging Final. Will we do any better next year when West Group host it?
We managed to raise £240.00 Carol Singing. I am sure they paid us not to sing!
On the sporting front Cutcombe entered the Somerset Young Farmers 7-a-side Men's Hockey Competition and came 2nd. Well done to Will Sherring, Ricky Farmer, Richard Henson, Tom Burge, Chris Clemets, Martin Cook, Tom White and Ridian Willford.
Cutcombe entered a team for the County Netball Competition and won overall. Well done to Kayleigh Fewings, Natalie Rawle, Alex Thompson, Emma Pugsley, Holly Purdey, Alison, Kathryn and Jennie Vellacott. Who later on in the year went to the South-West and came 2nd just behind Devon. Thanks to Verity Jonas and Julie Branfield who helped make up the team.
Cutcombe members joined forces with other members of West Group who managed to win County Rugby and they also went on the South-West after a good effort they were placed 3rd.
At the West Group Entertainment's there was stiff competition and we narrowly beat Williton YFC.
Congratulations to Hazel Burge who came 2nd in the Best Actress, Jono Woollacott won Best Actor, who just beat James Webber and Will Sherring. A few weeks later we were at the County Finals at Weston-Super-Mare and came 3rd! Congratulations to Hazel Burge who won Best Actress.
At the West Group Rally our club gained a few prizes with Stephanie Elston winning the Senior Cookery Cup and 2nd in overall points. The Club even won the Tug of War Competition.
The following week was the County Rally with the Club coming in 2nd in the Main Events Cup. Duncan Westcott coming in 3rd in the Sheep Shearing Competition, Natalie Rawle 4th in Junior Beef Stock-Judging, Helen Pile 3rd in Junior Horse Stock-Judging, Richard Henson 1st in British Bulldog and Cutcombe came 1st in The Italian Job. Well done to all members who took part.
The Club has kept some of the farming skills alive by hosting West Group Hedging and Shearing Competitions. The Competition was well supported by Club members and managed to gain some prizes. Hedging Competition 2nd Gary Atkins, 3rd Robin Elston. Sheep Shearing Competition Senior 2nd Tom Burge, 3rd Robin Elston, 4th Dick Tucker and Ridian Willford.
We attended the County Ball this year and a few members decided to turn-up in 70's gear rather than normal wear. Our Club likes to be different!
Robin Elston was so pleased that he managed to win the Casino. Is his luck going to hold out again this year?
During the year we went ten-pin bowling attended a Bingo, a Quiz, Blind-Drop and Discos.
We also held a disco, which managed to raise over £800 for the Boxing Day disaster. A big thank you to everyone who attended.
Rid and Rob had their head shaved in aid of a cancer charity and raised £163.75 - a big THANK YOU to everyone who contributed.
We said goodbye to Hazel Burge and James Webbers they go travelling. We look forward to hearing about their trip when they get back!
Congratulations to Dick Tucker and Steph Elston on their engagement.
Over the year Duncan and Caroline Westcott, Alice Pern, Caroline Smith, Charlotte Edwards, Ashton Matthews have all passed their driving tests. Look out for them on the roads!
Hazel Burge, Tim Stenner, Nicola Takle, Amy Westcott all reached the grand age of 21.
Caroline and Duncan Westcott turned 18.
The Club would like to thank all those over the year who gave up their time to help, support or encourage the club in any way. Good luck to next year's Officers.
CUTCOMBE & DISTRICT YFC REPORT (February 2006)- Sadie Parfitt
This Young Farmers Year has started off well with a keen committee and a packed schedule! We started off with our club Field Day, with all the members taking part in a number of handicrafts, cookery, stockjudging along with clay pigeon shooting and "It's a Knockout"!
Secondly we celebrated our 70th anniversary. The evening was enjoyed by all, even though the band was not quite what our advisory had expected.
As the nights started to get longer we played our league skittles matches. Unfortunately we weren't all that successful, only winning one out of four matches.
Carol Singing was next on the agenda. We spread it over two nights, the first around local farms and the second around the village. It was very successful - we raised £330 for Children's Hospice South-West.
2005 ended with a Christmas party. We played lots of stupid games - this was a great way to end a very successful year.
So far in 2006 we have been concentrating on rehearsing for our panto and are looking forward to winning at the West Group round (hopefully)!
We have new club shirts ordered and a few social events in the pipeline so…watch this space!
