EXMOOR YFC YEARBOOK REPORT 2007 ~ Vicky Wade
Well now it's time for some annual naming and shaming for some lucky members!!!
It all started way up on the hills building and painting a float for Dulverton Carnival, in the theme of Halloween, which we named "What's that coming over the hill....". After managing to use lots of paint, bracken, staples, duck tape and hundreds of toilet rolls, we stood up proud and received a cup for the best artist and best YFC float!
October saw us take a stroll around Cheltenham races, I'm sure everybody took great pleasure in betting, shopping and watching the horses (or the jockey's!).
Next on the agenda was the girl's football, having so many girls in our club it was no problem getting a team! So we trundled off to Taunton to play football and we won!!! Which was amazing as most of the time I think of couple of us were kicking ankles instead of the ball - sorry!!!!
The next club gathering was at Liscombe Farm for our Field Day. With a great turnout we managed to get everyone to have a go at everything - from stockjudging sheep, beef and horses to putting our full-trust in Katherine Williams!! Don't worry Katherine I think we all still trust you! Both Tina Winzer and Darren Bowley did really well; Tina won a cup for handicrafts and the most overall points while Darren won the cookery cup.
November and now the training started...well the thought was there! We completed a 12-mile bike ride with 23 members who braved the elements and hills from Hawkridge to Withypool, onto Exford and finally Winsford where we stopped peddling and ate lunch. We managed to raise an incredible £2134 which we donated to a charity called SURE; Somerset Unit for Cancer Care, which is raising funds for new cancer equipment at Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton.
Now we come to our local's favourite time of year...carol-singing! We decided on singing for two nights this Christmas and raised £499.36 which we donated to Little Bridge House, Children's Hospice South-West. To start with we were a little quiet but the singing soon increased! I think we had Mr Stanbury to thank for that as by the end of the night he sounded more like a soloist; I wonder if it had anything to do with the homemade sloe gin?!
No sooner had we put down our sports equipment we soon picked it back-up again for badminton. After a club warm-up, Dan and Serena Stanbury went to the county competition and played exceptionally well and came joint 3rd with Langport. Then we entered Devon territory and had a fun match against West Anstey!
In January four girls got their dancing shoes on for Disco Dancing and danced their way to 3rd place with Five's "If you're getting down" - so well done to Lucy, Steph, Serena and Suzanna.
After getting the club together it was time for more sports; netball. We had a fun evening of netball and a team was decided which went onto win at county.
Drama was near so rehearsals began, continued and continued! At the beginning we seemed a little too nice and quiet to be in the army! But by the performance we had it in the hat which enabled us to win at West Group with "Amy goes Army". This was amazing as we had never won before! Also congratulations to Steph who won Best Actress!
After all that drama we packed our fleet of 206's & 306's and headed off to Frome to continue our acting skills! Unfortunately a couple of us got really lost, even though we actually managed to pass the theatre a few times without even knowing! But we got ourselves together and came 2nd. Again Steph got Best Actress (I think it must have been something to do with the Bugs Bunny impression!) So a huge thanks to Denise Stanbury and everyone who helped whether on stage or behind!
Still staying sporty; we organised a sporting afternoon for West Group; fun was had by all even though it got slightly rough at times and most ended up on the floor!
Next on the social calendar was South-West Area Activities Weekend where Stacey celebrated her 18th birthday and Exmoor played netball! It was celebrated by a huge birthday meal followed by lots of games and songs..."I love you baby"...! I'm sure everyone had a brilliant night, oh that's if they made it to the night - Steph!!
The next day we played netball, lucky it was only Sarah and myself who looked a bit peaky as we all headed on down to meet the rest of the fresh-faced team who just arrived! We played well and came 4th, with great support. I'm sure they would have got first place if there was a competition for supporters!!
Now it was time for West Group Rally where we all had a great day. Well done to Jo Fuller who won a cup for having the most individual points! We came 2nd in the sports and won a cup for the most overall points - we celebrated well that night! Even if a couple of people couldn't remember it the next day!!
We then jumped onto a minibus and headed to the Student Union in Bristol for the Three Counties Ball - well that direction anyway!! We ended up getting really lost and almost not making it, so the lesson learned is to not always listen to dear TomTom! After a great ball everyone stumbled back to the bus. (Just be careful to never put your hands in the sand bins at any garage in Taunton due to Rachel not feeling too well!!!!)
Nationals were at Torquay and all the members who attended managed to excel themselves and I think that everyone had a brilliant weekend - even though it looks like the nicknames have stuck with you, ah Rocky, Miss Cornwall and ummmm...Borat!
Now, the best social event of the year - our disco! The theme was "Uniforms" so naturally there was lots of school, police and army uniforms but also a postwoman!! Further more I think a few lessons were learnt; always have a lift home sorted when you're in the middle of nowhere, there are no public buses at 1am, steady on the shots and when kissing someone aim for the lips....ok?! Better luck next time Lucy!!
Rally time was soon upon us which of course rates very high on the club's calendar, but lots were doing exams, so a huge well done to everyone who went and took part! Congratulations to Stephanie and Carol who won the "5 Minutes of Fame". They went onto take part in the National Final at The Royal Show in Warwickshire. After performing a song and dance from the theme of the "Sound of Music" they came 17th out of 27 so very well done!
In June we held our West Group Sheep Shearing and Skittles, which went really well and we had lots of Shearer's turn up. We had a great demonstration from an Australian Shearer, so I hope you were all watching, I know I was!!
Throughout the summer we have done lots of different events, it started off with our outside road-show. It was a great success with lots of new members turning up, who we got to know very well as we got to know each other quite intimately in just a few minutes! Then for Dunster Show we built a very good sheep display and came 2nd in the Tug-of-War.
Over the past year we have had lots of fun matches against different clubs from both Devon and Somerset; kept up-to-date with the latest films at the cinema; practised our bowling, rock climbing, canoeing and always arrived fashionably late to the usual balls and discos!
Without all the members pulling together I don't think we could have made it such a great year, so many thanks to everyone and I wish you all the best in the near future.
As Exmoor YFC has got so many girls in the club, we tended to have quite a few blonde comments, but this one topped them all:
"So how many pins are there in 10-pin bowling?"
This comment was said by a couple of girls and some to this day still don't even get it!! Never mind!!
EXMOOR YFC YEARBOOK REPORT 2005
Exmoor Young Farmers has had another fun successful year, starting with the carnival again. This years Olympic theme meant that we came third for the artistic category yet again. I'm not quite sure what happened to the runners that ended up on the float rather than running beside it!
The next occasion for a few seniors was the joint exchange to Tavistock.
This was definitely an experience, I don't know why I brought home a captain Scarlet and a blow up pig but having Rob and Daniel in my car might be the answer! For some reason only the pig reappeared on the second half of the exchange, where again we had more sociable activities lined up, such as a skittles welcome evening at the Sportsmans and the cowboys and Indians disco at Wiveliscombe and a sensible farm tour in between.
This years meeting contained a variety of events from an icing demonstration to a game of unihoc, all were well supported, I think Dan and John enjoyed the delicate cake decorating even more than the unihoc which is a bit concerning!
The field day at the beginning of November was a very well supported club event, well done to Jo for showing off her broad range of talents which won her the cookery cup, handicraft shield and the overall point's trophy.
After long discussions of the style, colour and make of rugby shirts everyone was presented with theirs in the new colours in December, just in time for the carol singing where we raised £215 for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.
The next events in the calendar were the Christmas party, which although it was after Christmas it was well supported and everyone had fun… apparently!
Also our first disco for quite some time was held in Winsford village hall, it turned out to be a very profitable occasion with very few problems, so much so that we had another in April where we managed to raise even more money. Due to the success of the discos the DJ fees went down and the donations from the bar went up!
The entertainments was the usual affair, changing our minds at the last minute and coming fourth overall, but we all had fun dressing up and laughing at John and his Gorilla outfit. The younger girls did very well with their dancing routine and especially to Steph Wade who was brave enough to sing a solo .
The introduction of a swear box this year was not as profitable as originally expected, it is surprising how little the boys said when they thought they might be losing some money!
I've had a really good year as secretary with membership rising to 24; I was very surprised how organised Daniel can actually be, on occasions.
It has been a very good year with balls and other entertaining events too numerous to mention. I would like to thank everyone for turning up and hopefully having as much fun I did.
I would like to wish everyone good luck for next year
