Highbridge YFC Yearbook Report 2007 ~ Rob Stone
This year has been another fun-packed roller coaster of a year, with a few downs, but many ups, and we also managed to gain a large number of new members by hook or by crook (hey Tara!).
This year started as normal preparing for the Harvest Supper, with the theme being "Down on the Farm". The entertainments were the usual main events, and a special mention should go to Andy P for his impression of a gay sheep (!), and to Mark Thomas as the randy dog! However this year's performance didn't run quite to plan, did it girls?! But Mary S rallied the troops and I think they redeemed themselves (just!) in Wendy's eyes!
Again, special thanks must go to Wendy Baker for her patience and imagination in sorting out the entertainments. We believe we had a record attendance at the Harvest Supper this year, and it was all going fine until Taunton Deane turned up!!
No sooner had we finished Harvest Supper it was Carnival time, with the theme being "Super Heroes".A big thanks must go to Andy D for making it happen, and it was a pity about that ?*!#? generator!!
Next it was the County Ball at Rookery Manor. If anyone remembers what happened please let me know!
As Christmas came closer, a strange sound was to be found coming from the Highbridge area, it could mean only one thing.....carol singing time!! A big thank-you to those who gave so generously and had to put up with our singing. However Hayley P did acquire a new taste for dog biscuits!
The Boxing Day Boogie provided another excellent night out with the theme being "Pirates and the Caribbean", and a number of Jack Sparrow and Keira Knightley "wannabes" were there!
We then moved onto the main event of the year - the Drama Production of Worzel Gummidge. I will say no more than "we were robbed!". But a special mention must go to the stars of the show - our youngest junior members ever - Molly and Freddie. These people are the future of Highbridge so watch out county!!
South-West Area was another drunken affair - back in Weymouth, and it was the first time since "I don't know when" when we were not doing either drama or entertainments and with no Wendy B to worry about, the town was painted red!! What happens on tour stays on tour, but I believe Adam P, Amy C and Sam had a good time, and Andy P kept up the inter-club relationship with Polden Hills!
Talking of Polden Hills, we beat them twice this year at Hockey - a first for us! No small part to our star player, Jo C.
This year we hosted a charity football match with Orchard FM which we won, no small part to Small Paul and big thanks must go to Martin D for organising the event!
Next, we packed the Batch Country Hotel for our annual Dinner & Dance, where a good time was had by all, especially one of our junior members who showed us a new style of dancing!
Highbridge supported the Rally in it's own unique fashion by propping up the bar, but this year we did have some success and can boast having the best "welly wanger" in John F and the best "bale thrower" in Andy P (who would have thought it!).
We have had a busy year and have taken part in many activities. We have even had time for a speaker!
We have also had a number of 21st birthdays to celebrate, but the one that stands out the most is Amos's and the naked run around the pub!! Amos, you're a LEGEND!!
The last major event of the year was the annual drunken bike ride, and a good day was had by most, except for Adam who had to work (hard luck!).
I hope everybody has enjoyed their year, and I would like to thank everybody who has made this year the success and as enjoyable as it has been.
Finally I would like to wish Highbridge YFC all the best now it has Adam in charge!!
Highbridge Yearbook Report 2005
With Kim as chairman(or shall I say chairlady!) this year promised to be an eventful one, and we weren't dissapointed! Although she did have her work cut out for her trying to organise Highbridge!
To kick start the year off we had the business of Harvest Supper to attend to. This was a medically themed evening which was well attended and enjoyed by all (despite the slightly under cooked; if cooked at all jacket potatoes!!!).
With kinky nurses teaching first aid skills to the advisory how could we have failed?! Our thanks must go to Dawn and Weston hospital (unbeknown to them!) for supplying the nurses uniforms, the many elderly relatives of Highbridge members who suddenly found they were left hobbling when their walking sticks and wheel chairs mysteriously disappeared! And of course to Wendy for agreeing to be the brains behind the evening for yet another year!
As soon as the Harvest Supper was over, rehersals started in earnest for the entertainments competition. Our entry "The High Life" gave members of Highbridge the chance to become irish dancers, trolley dollys, sweddish clappers, belly dancers, the Jackson 5, kossack dancers and much more !!!! It was definately the "high light" of the year for the club obviously we were all a little dissapointed at being pipped to the post once again by the larger clubs.
Although when we think back to that 1st rehearsal at Wendy's, we didn't believe we would be able to carry it off with a cast of only 19. We should all be very proud of ourselves.
Standing on the stage at the national final is certainly something I'll never forget.
Perhaps one of the most enjoyable performances was the one we put on at the Princess Hall for our cheese and wine evening, put quite simply there just wasn't enough space! Our thanks must once again go to Mark, Wendy and Lionel for all the hours of hard work they put into us and to all those who supported us throughout. Thank you.
County Ball came and went and I am informed that a great night was had by all, unfortunately I can't remember much of it!!!
As usual the festivities of Christmas soon came round and with them came our ever so tuneful voice's entertaining (or not!) our friends and family. Many thanks must go to all those who put up with us and gave generously to our selected charities ( but probably more to try and get us to stop singing as quickly as possible!).
The Boxing day Boogie with its movie stars theme saw AliG's, Cat woman, the Flintstone family, Lara Croft, Cleopatra,Garfield, Marilyn Monroe and many more stars within the club. But I think everyone will agree with me that the the most impressive couple of the evening was superman and superwoman(aka Mary and Mark!). As usual a great night was had by all, I had a most interesting evening getting to know a handsome stranger!
Snow Ball soon followed with a great time being had by all, especially Pete! "I felt as rough as a badger!" The girls were particularly impressed by the inflatables and the ice torso!
South West area was back in Newquay once again, I think I can safely say that this was a weekend none of us will forget in a hurry! With two hospital visits one with Adam for his swollen......glands! ( whom we now suspect for starting the mumps epidemic within the area!), George due to his encounter with a traffic cone!, for the girls pole dancing!!, Mary's impressive self defense skills and for our ever so sober entertainments rehearsal on the Saturday evening having spent all day sampling what Newquay had to offer!!! I'm sure Wendy had every confidence in us after that one! Sorry Wendy!
We were somewhat more successful at this years rally than last, with Adam and his trolly dollys with their rendition of "come fly with me", yet again!, some talented members of the club managing to scoop a first in the morris dancing!, and Kimmys tart skills!
A good night was had by all with lots of fun on the dance floor, unfortunately Dave captured most of it on camera!
Adams legendary big tent was once again put to good use by many a drunken Highbridge member.
More recently we invaded the seaside town of Solcombe for a weekend, where we tried out the boys toys, their boats!! This was a great catch up, having not seen much of each other for most of the summer apart from the odd harvest home.
There were the usual drink fuelled YF antics with Adam trying to steal that bar stool but not quite getting away with it, Pete acquiring a BBQ for Mary and Mark, Adam, Andy and Tom rolling that big bale all the way back to the campsite, Dawn star gazing so much that she fell down the cattle grid despite trying to warn her, Adam falling off the kerb "It just came out of nowhere! ", the considerate re-parking of a vehicle (It had VERY impressive flashing lights!)and the repositioning of numerous signs!
We've certainly had some good times this year, too many to list!
All that's left to say is a huge thank you to everyone who's made it such a success, in particularly to kimmy who I'm sure all the club will agree has been a brilliant chair-lady. Paul you have a hard act to follow!
Good luck to everyone for 2006.
HIGHBRIDGE YFC REPORT (June 2006) ~ Adam Popham
Righty then, where shall I start - at the beginning of the year I suppose?! Highbridge has had another lively year this year still recruiting new members and still causing havoc wherever we go.
We started this year off with our annual Harvest Supper with the girls showing off their assets to keep the older generation happy and the boys showing too much off and keeping no-one happy.
Carnival soon followed, which was a drunken mess on and off the float! Yet again the girls were looking fine and the lads were getting tangled up in bras and thongs!
Boxing Day Boogie was again a huge success bringing in the hundreds, our theme this year was "999", which brought nurses, firemen, policemen and all you boring b**tards who didn't dress up! Being our main source of income we raised lots of money to spend on our next drama production whenever it is!
We decided to venture somewhere different for New Year's Eve this year and where better than our Chairman's home town of Bideford, Cornwall…I mean Devon!
This started off so well putting back a couple of pints at 3pm but then 15 hours later when we were getting kicked out of a back-lane pub at 6am it was a different story!
Amos had acquired a 6ft road barrier and we still haven't worked out who that extra person was leaving the flat at 7am! Most of the night was a blur but I do remember seeing our County Chairman down there also looking a drunken mess!
Skipping on few months to just the other day, it was the rally at Cannington - what an excellent day and night had by all. Well done to everyone who organised the event and helped on the day as it all ran very smoothly. Congratulations must go to ALL of our winners (Kim and Mary) and to everyone else who got placed.
The Spice Girls (lads) had to be the highlight of the X Factor - I can't believe we only came second! Also thanks must go to Dave for cutting my lip whilst trying to cram 37 sherbert flying saucers into my mouth in 1 minute. He got me third place though so I suppose it was worth it!
So that's about it from the Highbridge massive, we have a couple of Stag-do's and weddings to look forward to over the summer and all that's left to say is "See You Next Time"!
