KINGSBROMPTON YFC YEARBOOK REPORT 2007
As always our year started off with Dulverton Carnival. This year's chosen theme was the reality TV show "I'm a Celebrity, Get me out of here" or "I'm a Young Farmer, Get me in there!" as we renamed it!! There were a few guest appearances from the likes of Jordan and Peter Andre, David Guest, Prince Charles, David Beckham and Elvis! Ok, so they weren't actually in the programme but we couldn't think of anyone else who was!!
At the end of October we held a Halloween themed disco at Brompton Regis Village Hall. There was an excellent turn-out with many coming in fancy dress and all having a good time. We managed to raise £1200 which was split between club funds and the Air Ambulance.
A handful of our members joined West Group on a trip to Cheltenham Races. Most of them came back with empty pockets!
A few of us went up to Chew Valley's Snow Ball, which was memorable because Jason Heard spewed up everywhere, on the hotel stairs, outside, all up the side of a car on the way back through Taunton and at the side of a road in Taunton!
We all dressed up for Three Counties Ball and took a full mini-bus upto Bristol! Another good night out, we shall be there again next year!
The Annual Hedging competition was held on 5th November hosted by Williton YFC. Ken Ware from Kingsbrompton won the Senior event.
As always we had a generation skittles evening to decide which members from Kingsbrompton were to go through to the West Group round as well as being a good social evening, this year held at the Lowtrow Cross Inn. In the end Nigel and Ben Cowling and Melissa and Graham Smith were the highest scorers and Mel and Graham made it all the way to the county round!
The Lowtrow Cross Inn was also the venue for our skittles evening to help raise funds for next year's County Rally, to be hosted by West Group. The evening raised £90 for the cause, after prize money had been taken out which was raised to £150 by the club.
Mel Julian entered Junior Member of the Year contest again this year, winning at West Group and coming second in the county final.
The drama event this year was a bit of a disaster! After we had to steal a member from Williton (I think she preferred us really!) as one of our members didn't turn up, we only managed 4th with "Festival Play". The judge reckoned that it was the wrong choice of play, so we could blame our director (as good as he is!) Geoff Ware instead of our poor acting this time!
Three of our members travelled down to the South-West Area Activities Weekend in Weymouth this year. Jason Heard, Mel and Mike Julian went down and after getting lost in Weymouth looking for the hotel and then fighting our way onto the shuttle buses an excellent time was had by all and we are all looking forward to next year's event. Look out Newquay!!
Next up were the rallies! Firstly West Group held by Williton, we were a little low on numbers but still managed to do well (quality not quantity!) and gave it our best shot, even if it did end in injury as Club Chairman, Ben Cowling, slipped on the sheet covered in washing-up liquid and nearly knocked out his teeth and gave himself a nice little nose bleed!! We came 4th again this year although Mike Julian came second in the overall individual points and won the Boys Cookery Cup for the 4th time. Well done mother!!
County Rally was after that and this year we had to travel all the way to Churchill, most of us have never been the other side of Taunton! But we set off nice and early and managed to find our way there! We did well this year; 3rd in the Overall Cup for Clubs with less than 30 members, not bad for West Group rally games less than half that!!
The West Group Women's Tug-of-War team also got through to South-West Area after some thorough competition! We reckon it was all thanks to our club secretary, Mel "Big Guns" Julian! We all agreed it was a good rally, well those that could remember did anyway, the others were told!!
Other events this year were the West Group Sheep Shearing competition where Ben Cowling came 1st, South West Area Competitions Day where Mel Julian and Laura Dobson came 3rd in Junior Road Safety and Ben Cowling came 10th in Junior Stockjudging.
We also helped out with the Ironman 70.3 held at Wimbleball Lake for the second year. Helpers included Ben Cowling, Lucy and Steven Luxton. Club Leader and Advisory member, Russell Cowling entered the competition and came 10th in his age category and 63rd overall (out of nearly 1300 competitors!). It's a massive acheivement even to finish but to do this well is brilliant so we would like to congratulate Russell.
We also lent a hand at Dunster Show again this year, stewarding the horse rings and promoting YFC in the West Group tent. This year for the first time we also held a Tug-of-War competition. We managed to make up a team, comprising of four Kingsbrompton, three Anstey and one Cutcombe member, where we managed 3rd place!
Well that's it for another year, and it wasn't a bad one for us either! Hopefully next year will bring us a few more members amd more good results at both group and county level.
I would like to thank all our members, advisory and presidents and also anyone else who helped us out through the years!
Cheers 'en!!
KINGSBROMPTON YFC YEARBOOK REPORT 2005
We made a good start to the year by taking two cups at Dulverton Carnival for best YFC float and best comic due to the change of sex for an evening!
Then we had a couple of serious events to raise money for the Devon and Somerset Air Ambulance, this was acheived by a nice walk on a frosty November morning. This was closely followed by our attempt at carol singing (where we were paid to go away!).
Then the hard work began, scripts and parts were issued and we started practice for our entertainments, where we gained 3rd place at the West Group Round with Mel Julian taking West Group Junior Member of the Year.
The next main event was the West Group Rally which our club hosted atr Ruglands Farm (thanks to the Cowling family), which we went onto win with a 100 point lead. After this attempt we deicied that the county was the next aim, we came home with three placings in the cups as follows, 2nd in Overall Points, 3rd in Competitions and 3rd in the Under 30 Members.
