Year Report
Kicking off really with the Annual Ploughing Match which was well attended, raising over £1000 for the Air Ambulance…despite the weather being typically English and wet!! But we all mucked in and enjoyed the day, the wetter the better for the Landrovers…I should’ve entered a class!!
Soon after was our “Back to School” disco at Clapton… a great night enjoyed by all!! The evening raised £2000 for the 2009 Wessex Rally! With a slight re-adjustment of the coat rack and a lick of paint in the Ladies’, the place was as good as new…with the added bonus of an outdoor fridge for a couple of months after the disco…cheers Broomer!! The time soon passed and it was County Ball time again…not so well attended by our club...but those who went made a brilliant night of it! The Christmas meal was delicious…or the cider was!? Closely followed by our yearly Christmas Eve pub crawl…conquering 13 pubs, a spoof in each but still managing to get back to the local for last orders!!!!...Result! Boxing Day Boogie was again a great night with Will getting up close and personal with another penguin!? And on a colder note we all had awesome fun in the snow with Tris hedging 3 times and many rides of ‘quad sledging’, with the odd snowman thrown in for good measure! Bravely we’ve ventured over the borders a few times to attend discos, beer or cider festivals or anything else that looked good and was going on at the time!!? The good old fashioned Ilminster YFC’s ‘Bond and Bunnies’ disco never fails to deliver a cracking night out…looking almost smart! Then before you know it Weston’s calling…SWA - what a weekend!! A semi renovated hotel/old retirement home, far too much alcohol and junk food, a massive sand-castle-looking object erected on the beach, dressing up as gorgeous stunning women!…What more could anyone ask!?? Will, Will and Charlie represented Somerset as part of the football team and did surprisingly well with no goals being conceded! Safe hands!! The same three went on to join the Wessex Cricket team in the summer who won the County 6-a-side competition! Helping organise the County Rally this year took up a lot of time but was well worth it, meeting a variety of people and making some lifelong friends along the way! But overall it was great fun, an amazing experience and well worth all the hardship! In our club several members held important roles on the Rally committee; Rally Chairman, Treasurer, Social Secretary, Site Manager, Competitions Organiser. All of the others who helped out were needed so a big well done and thank you to those involved! A terrific weekend! On more of a local note we’ve been helping with various shows in the area including Chard show, Crewkerne show and Hardington carnival, dressing up on a float called ‘The Smurzles’, then winning the cricket and coming second in the tug of war… what a night!! As the days got longer and the weather warmer…well…slightly, out come the rafts and the famous ‘pentri-cycle’ riding it to “the Wurzels” and on a mystery pub crawl…crawl being the best word! Jon, Mark, Tris and Charlie remained champions in the Lowland Games Bale Rolling! Our club AGM went smoothly and was well attended, which has made way for some new officers and some old ones changing roles…so good luck to you all, and a big thank you to all the Advisory for keeping us on the straight and wide!! Let’s carry on making each year stronger and better then the last!
