2009 Year Report
By Ed Coombes & Jenny Steele We started the year with our new members meeting; we had a great turn out with all new members who came along then join up; the evening was a great success as everyone joined in with the games like apple bobbing and eating doughnuts off an overhead string. The majority of new members joining this year have mostly been juniors and younger members which has secured future members. Our Harvest Supper soon crept up and due to other events organised on the same evening we struggled to get our usual numbers but still managed to have a good night. To thank everyone who helped on the evening and to cure hangovers we took a trip to Towerpark, for a day on the waterslides! Our first trip out with the new members took us to Cheddar Chocolate Factory, where we all tasted different chocolates, some more than others (Brendon)! The trip finished back at the pub where one of our newest members was sick after eating a little too much chocolate! As Wessex Group were hosting the Rally this year each club held a fundraising event; our club decided to hold a Halloween disco where we had good turn out and raised money for the rally. We have had a successful year with sport this year, with our efforts to retain our county title in Hockey, although due to extreme weather conditions the finals were cancelled. Also this year we have managed to gain the title of Rounder’s County Champions. Bingo came round very quickly and finally we managed to gain the numbers we hoped for and managed to raise approximately £700!! In a bid to raise some more money for the club we had our Christmas Carol singing and charity Boy’s Leg Wax which made our club around £1000!!! Although the boy’s were not too happy with the pain they had to go through!! Our carol singing this year was one of our more successful years I think; this may have been due to the music to drown us out by, thanks for that Geoff, Jack and Dan! We attended Boxing Day Boogie and County Ball this year where we managed to fill buses and consume vast amounts of alcohol! Also we had a good group go to Snow Ball this year which ended up being an eventful evening with Dan getting so drunk he was sick on the way home in Lydia’s hair then managing to sleep-walk out a top story window and break his pelvis!!! S.W.A was next on our agenda and we travelled to Weston for the weekend where we all enjoyed ourselves and drank far too much. We came back wondering about two of our member’s sexuality as our chairman Ed and Brendon both came back with matching tattoos on their bum’s!!! A few weeks later came the National AGM where 9 of our members travelled up to Blackpool for a brilliant weekend although Georgi managed to miss the second night after passing out at 6pm!! Our Dinner and Dance this year was held at our usual venue which we managed to fill and the evening was enjoyed by everyone. We had a great guest speaker and excellent band and we managed to make some money for our club! This year due to Wessex holding the Rally our club got involved in helping to make the day a success special thanks to Jack who organised the Main Events and the girls who helped with the food throughout the weekend.Once again this year we took part in the Lowland Games raft race; we entered two boy’s teams and a girl’s team. The boy’s however forgot to fix the holes in the raft and unfortunately didn’t win this year but did finish even though their raft was sinking. The girl’s however did win keeping their title for 2 years running. Well done girls!!! One of the highlights this year was our club exchange with St Buryan YFC from Cornwall; we travelled down to them for a weekend where we joined them in their local for food games and lots of drinking, although Tommy decided to dump tackle one of their members in the middle of the pub. The next morning we had a trip to a local farm and surrounding attractions, that evening was their Annual Young Farmers Disco and the evening was enjoyed by all (from what we can remember)! They then travelled up to us; we also took them to our local pub where we had food, played skittles and drinking games. The next morning we organised a trip to Burrow Hill Cider Farm, we did a bit of tasting as well, although one of the exchange members still hadn’t quite recovered from the night before as he fainted during the tour! We then made them climb Glastonbury Tor and that evening 30 of us went to Claverham Big Night Out!! That about sums up our year - it’s been eventful, we would just like to thank everyone for their support and help this year.
