Year Report

2009 Year Report

By Kirsty Carnell

The YFC year started off with the usual business meeting, when Ross Giles decided to tell us about his confusion as to whether tractors were allowed on motorways or not!! Ross, whilst driving a tractor in Highbridge turned up the road to get on the motorway, but didn’t go north, went south to Bridgwater along the hard shoulder. Plus the tractor was minus its wing mirror!!

Hannah Sheridan and Jack Withers’ 18th Birthday Party was a good laugh. This is when our fascination with Cleeve Cricket Club was born! Thanks for a great party!

Our Harvest Supper was next. The meal went well and so did the speeches! The entertainments were based on dancing, the boys got into their tutu’s and pink tights, but they needed help, so what to use? Baby Oil! But somehow it ended all over the hall! Sorry Carol.

We then had a talk from Bristol Zoo. Our very own Amy Bye did the talk and showed us some creepy crawlies and different animal skins. She also made us do impressions of a chimpanzee; Tom Bye stood out as he sounded just like one!

Our annual Car Treasure Hunt was organised by two advisory members, Dan and George. It went well and ended in a pub 30 miles away from the starting point. When we arrived at the pub they had another part of the hunt to do...see which team could put a condom on a banana the quickest! Surprisingly it was the Baber’s who won!

We attended Weston Carnival in November. It was very wet and cold but some good floats. On the way home Reg decided to take a trolley full of swords and bunny ears on the train and into the pub! God knows what happened after!

We had a good turnout for County Ball and it was Lindsey Carnell’s debut as a DJ (with DJ Timmy). All was going well and everyone was dancing away, until Lindsey put on “Cotton Eyed Joe”, then it went wrong!! But Tom Bye soon lifted the spirit in his usual way... singing!

We went on a visit to a farm who raise Pedigree Blonde Cattle. It was very interesting and they made good coffee and cakes afterwards! We also had a talk from Pullins Bakery; the tasters were good and the best part was a goodie bag full of cakes!

It was now December, which means only one thing, carol singing! We started off at the Carnell’s in Tickenham, with some nibbles and drink we got in the mood and sung our hearts out very fast! After two nights of singing we made £202.59 for Clevedon Cottage Hospital.

We had our Christmas Meal with the rest of Severn Group at Brent House. We were on our best behaviour and had a wicked time! I don’t think Kirsty Carnell can remember much as she woke up with bruises everywhere! A good night was enjoyed by all!

To finish the week off, we had our annual Carol Service and Disco. Tom Bye, Ross Giles, Amy Bye and Kirsty Carnell did well with their readings, a big thanks to them. The disco after was great, thanks to Tim and Lindsey for putting a great show on!

We were then into a new year, 2009! We went Go-Karting in Avonmouth and Ice-Skating.

The Great Western Air Ambulance came and talked to us and we presented a cheque of £1000 to them, just a small proportion of what we raised from last year’s Big Night Out.

We then attended Chew Valley YFC’s Snow Ball. This was well attended and well enjoyed especially with the food!

We had a Body Shop party the following Monday; let’s just say there were more girls than boys, but the boys didn’t stop joining in and trying new products. But it was Anna Cole who was put forward to have a makeover!

We then attended the BSJA Ball, with 30 of us on the table. The meals were smaller than usual and a lot of the lads could have eaten a lot more! But they drank instead!!

Farrington Gurney YFC invited us along to a tour of Butcombe Brewery with them. We had a good tour of the building and how they make the pint. The guide then announced that they don’t have a licence to sell their alcoholic products, so the bar was free, to the happiness of some of our members!

Kirsty then organised the Severn Group Disco. It was well attended by North Somerset YFC. Tim decided to have a game of musical chairs, which got messy - Jason Bishop won!

Lindsey Carnell had her 18th Party and Sarah Burdge had her 21st Party in March, both at Cleeve Cricket Club and both really enjoyable!

It was then time for SWA in Weston! The females from the club dressed up as Haymakers and got the attention!! The night was danced away in Vision, minus Royston Baber as he got chucked out! On the Saturday, Kirsty somehow got squirted with mustard by some Cornish man in Yates’. The Carnell’s, Jo Page and Amy Clark brought out the Hi-Viz again with glow sticks and meter long straws, which got a bit messy in DK! Tom Bye and Tim Perrett somehow got a trip round the block in a LIMO?!? But the funniest part of the night was when Royston Baber and Sarah Burdge came out the foam covered head to toe in the stuff, and poor Royston couldn’t see through his glasses!

The club then went on a visit to Weston Magistrates Court, inviting Weston and Banwell YFC, Chew Valley YFC, Wrington YFC and Bridgwater YFC along; a total of 70 members! Whilst there we looked around the court rooms and the cells.

It was then Dinner and Dance time, which we held at the Walton Park Hotel, Clevedon. We had a lovely meal, followed by speeches, raffle and lots of dancing. Our guest speaker was Robert Venner, thank you to him. Tom Bye did a lovely speech about the year, well done Thomas! The raffle was the highlight of the evening. Ross had an idea of selling each strip for a £1 or 10 strips for £10 and you got one free. The problem was he had sold all 3 books and hadn’t finished going around half the room!!

The big day had arrived! Nationals 2009! 18 members from North Somerset went to Blackpool and had an amazing weekend. The Friday started off at Tom Bye’s house. His mum gave us a lecture about being safe and swine flu! She gave Tom, Emma, Kirsty and Lindsey masks to wear to protect themselves! So we went for breakfast first at Puxton Park and then met everyone at the Bardwell’s fully swine protected!

The bus journey was a laugh, drinking, singing, and reading from magazines! All the evening events were great but fancy dress night was brilliant! Kirsty and Lindsey decided not to go with the theme superheroes, but as the board game TWISTER!

The day at Walkabout was the best, dancing away with Jimmer, and having jug races! And the Teapot came out again with Lindsey in charge. George Knowles thought it would be fun to make Willy Windmills around the hotel with two others, then run into the sea!!

We then ended the weekend at the North Somerset Show at 4.30pm!!

As soon as that ended we were making handicrafts for the Rally. A BIG well done to Sarah Burdge who came second overall with her handicraft entries. The competitions were great, especially when Jack White became a dog for Tom! The evening do was enjoyed by our members too; well done to Wessex Group for a great rally.

Then it was Jason Bishop’s Surprise Party. Jason was very surprised and it was a great night! Until the stripper turned up; Jason ran away so James Baker stepped in!! But this wasn’t a normal stripper it was a “gross-a-gram”! Fair play to Baker for taking it!!

We had a trip to the Weston Wheel. Only a few of us went because it was raining and you couldn’t see much. But as it was Royston’s Birthday they went out in town on a Monday night!!

A few of our members went along to the Bath and West Show to help. It was such a hot day but was fun, and we saw Prince Charles.

The trip to Nailsea Fire Station was interesting. We got split into two groups and looked around the building at the fire engines, until they had not one but two call outs at the same time! Some excitement for the night! It was very enjoyable!

Mendip Farmers Raft Race was back, and so was Tintanic the second! Adrian Baber made a replica of the raft from two years ago! The team was Lee, Tom, George and Jason. It was working just fine, until James Baker joined the team and it all went wrong because he lost his boots in the lake! So this year we didn’t win, but we are ready for the next one! Tom Bougourd decided to take a dip in the lake, and what a lovely sight!!

Claverham Big Night Out was on the horizon, so we started sign painting and setting up the shed. The day then came, bar, bands, disco, food was ready! The rain held off until 11pm but it was still a successful night, taking £23,894 on the night! Profit is still being worked out. A big thank you to all the clubs that came, hope you enjoyed yourselves!

Tom, Amy, Kirsty, Lindsey, Jo, Elli and Jennie went along to help with Sheep Racing at Wick Harvest Home. Was a great laugh as the sheep just didn’t want to go in the trailer! But we made £300 for helping.

We have been busy with sports and skittles this year, playing Chew Valley YFC, Weston and Banwell YFC, Wedmore YFC and Farrington Gurney YFC. We won some, we lost some, but we had fun!

This coming year, some of our members are off around the world! So a big GOOD LUCK to Kate Hodges, Anna Cole, Lee White and Lindsey Carnell.

This year has flown by, but it’s been a great year as always! A big thank you to Tom Bye for being a great Chairman; he’s kept the club together well.

And thanks to all of the members who have helped make the success of the club. Good luck to next year’s Chairman. Here’s to the next year in YFC!
