Year Report
2009 Year Report

After a successful AGM with all posts filled we launched into the 08/09 Young Farmers calendar and what a year it has been!
The first main event of the year was the Club Exchange with Biscester Young Farmers. October saw us whizz up the M5/M4 to Oxford where we were warmly welcomed to various households for the weekend. On the first night we attended Biscester’s Dinner Dance.
Saturday was a farm tour on a large arable unit followed by live rugby and a pub session where Stewart Bell excelled himself in the drinking stakes. Three questions for you Stewie “Fancy a buca? Who’s your mate in the pub? And are those your trousers?” Biscester YFC visited us in January, to be continued...
In November we marshalled at Bridgwater Carnival where we raised more than £1600, for which I need to thank everybody involved especially the ones who drew the short straws dealing with irate drivers!
As we headed towards Christmas we entered the Ball season attending many; drinking and dancing the night away until Daniel Son’s (Dan Toogood) prompt bus service delivered us home. Cheers Danny.
Before long Christmas was upon us and we embarked on four nights of Carol-singing to the locals of Wellington and Taunton. Fuelled with sloe gin and a bottle of port rolling around in the back of the cattle trailer we managed to raise £700. The money was split between the Laura Percey Trust Fund and the Albermarle Stroke Club. We had a great time raising the funds; big thanks to all especially Donna Chave and Charlie Ellis for their laughs and giggles on the Langford Budville route.
The Biscester return! On the Friday night we took a trip to the Snow Ball at the Webbington Hotel. Brilliant evening which unfortunately ended in A & E for one of the guests after stubbing her toe badly on a broken glass.
On Saturday with sore heads all round we had a farm tour followed by a pub quiz in the afternoon and bird watching in Taunton in the evening!
To finish off the weekend on a high we took them to a local point-to-point; a good ending to a fantastic exchange. Well done to Clare Mitchell for organising it, she did a sterling job!
Over the coming months we had a curry night (where they ran out of curry), an ice-skating trip to Bristol, Go-Karting where new member Chris Quick dominated the track coming in first, stockjudging training and much, much more.
In April we re-launched the Wellington & Taunton YFC Dinner Dance. Big thanks to Clare Mitchell, Daisy Smith and Sarah Butcher for helping to organise the evening. It was great to see past and present members get together and see that Phil and Bulty’s dance moves haven’t improved with age.
During June and July we focused our attention on our beloved pig (the Wellington and Taunton YFC recruitment aid, which consists of an old slurry tanker and a lick of pink paint). The old girl has been restored to her former glory, look out for her around the countryside, she has already attracted new members. Many thanks to everyone who gave up their evenings to help weld, mend and paint her. Especially Cally Williamson for her precise letter writing!
As the penultimate event of my Chairmanship we decided to resurrect ‘Drink til you Drop’, which we hosted at Richard Paris’ farm; a perfect venue.
We had a “Bucking Bronco” thanks to Chris and John Quick, an excellent DJ and a team of top helpers. You know who you are – thank you for all the help.
Looking forward to it being an even bigger success next year! P.S. Chris, did you find out who the Chard Hards were?!
I’ll finish by saying a huge thank you to all of the members. You have helped make this a great year and it’s been brilliant to watch the new membership grow. Good luck to the officers and crew for next year!
