Year Report

2009 Year Report

By Maria Locke This year was a significant year for Weston and Banwell YFC as it was the clubs 70th Anniversary. We got off to a busy start with the Annual General Meeting. Richard Greaves was our Chairman this year and Katie Bradley Hudson kindly took on the role of President. This year we decided to organise our programme slightly differently by giving each member a night to organise. Our ‘home’ pub became the Railway Inn at Sandford where Judy and Paul have always gone out of their way to support us in any way they can. The rules were to keep the cost low and ensure all could take part! We have had some fantastic evenings including a Blind Drop, Bowling trip, a talk from an undertaker, a trip to Avon and Somerset’s police Armoury (luckily security was very tight that night and nobody managed to smuggle a gun out!!), dry slope skiing and a tour of the Helicopter Museum. One comment that everyone has remembered was Matt Keate saying ‘you can’t just leave us here and expect us to know where we are!!’ Yes Matt we can that’s the point of a blind drop!!! The Harvest Supper was again a huge success with lots of hard work and dedication from all of our members. We decided to do sketches for our entertainment this year. Some of the content was badger baiting in front of the “Britain’s Got Talent” judges and Bert Cooke being grilled by the “Dragons Den”! County Ball was a great night at Rookery Manor and was enjoyed by all who attended. We had our Christmas meal at the “Whistling Duck” in Banwell this year; again a very enjoyable evening. We did Secret Santa with a price limit of up to £5! Some of the presents where rather amusing and a few of our members would have been rather embarrassed if they had opened them with their parents on Christmas morning!! We also did lots of carol singing again this year. We were still as terrible as before (possibly worse than last year in fact!!) But we enjoyed ourselves and raised a lot of money!  We also helped with the carnival and at the Glastonbury Festival. The return of the Christmas bicycle tour saw an even more impressive entry from Spike and Simon this year with a CD player to help us along! The usual pubs were visited and it stayed dry this year! Martin and Rich fell off their bikes on a number of occasions but no serious injuries were sustained!! Boxing Day Boogie was another event well attended by our members and a few had sore heads the next morning! Our Annual Dinner and Dance was held next at Batch Country Hotel. With it being our 70th year we had a fantastic turn out and all went well. Thanks to Char, Ed, Maria, Rich and Jenn for all of your help organising and selling tickets! We have played lots of sport this year and even managed to come joint first in the Hockey Tournament, fantastically organised by Farrington Gurney YFC. We enjoyed lots of skittles matches. We managed third place in the county final and the lads have had a few games of football. South West Area was in our home town this year! We enjoyed the weekend even though we missed the excitement of being away from home! We had a great weekend and even managed to play for our county in the Football finals at Priory on Sunday. Next to come on the calendar was the Rally which saw fantastic weather and a great entry number for handicrafts from our club. Emma Davis was the star of the show being placed with lots of her entries and the whole club enjoyed taking part in the main events. Dave and Claire Quick’s wedding was another fantastic day enjoyed by all and as a club we would like to take this opportunity to thank Dave for all his support and wish them a very long and happy future together. We are now busy organising a 70th anniversary afternoon event at Batch Country Hotel for all of our older members who were unable to attend our Dinner and Dance. A big thank you has to be given to all on our advisory committee. They have helped and supported us throughout the year and it has been much appreciated. Also thank you to every member who has supported the club on visits, sports competitions and especially at the Rally. Lastly, good luck to the new Chairman and Secretary. Let’s make it another successful year for Weston and Banwell YFC!
