Year Report

2009 Year Report

By Ruth Jennings Our year started off with a successful Harvest Supper where we members auctioned ourselves off as cleaners, gardeners and babysitters to parents and advisory to raise some money!  Sunday mornings quickly became busy with hockey (losing, mainly) and Sunday nights with public speaking practices as we entered Junior, Intermediate and Senior teams in the County Final with everyone performing brilliantly!  November also saw us host a Race Night to raise money for the Rally which was fantastically supported by everyone connected to the club and a good time was had by all! In December we held our carol service which was going really well until the electricity went out! We finished the service in candlelight and with no organ to hide the sound that we call singing. This ‘music’ could be heard again a few days before Christmas as we toured the local countryside asking for money in exchange for only hearing 2 or 3 carols sung by us!  In the New Year, we had several interesting talks and visits – to the fire station, Avalon cider, ice-skating and a visit from the traffic police. We celebrated Tom and Steve’s 18th birthday’s and Hilary’s 21st birthday in usual style. And, we finally managed to beat our Advisory at a skittles match and reclaim the cup!  SWA soon arrived and it saw 30 of us head up to Weston for the weekend. Tucker let the side down with his poor drinking performance – arriving at 2pm on the Saturday only to be passed out in the hotel with ice down his trousers by 6pm! He never made it to the foam party that night! Amazingly, the hotel said they were happy to have us back again even after people getting locked out of their rooms in the middle of the night and us turning the lounge into a beauty parlour to wax Tom and Jimmer’s legs! And Jimmer says he never cries...  Every year this happens  - we go to Bristol for the Three Counties Ball. And we get lost on the way there and on the way back! Meaning we missed the Wurzels! Still, a good time had by all! That same weekend saw us win the County round of Skittles – trust us to be only good at the one sport that’s based in a pub! May saw us head down to the Rally where we entered loads of handicrafts and competitions. The boy’s entered a composite Wessex team for Tug of War after some last minute coaching from Merv.  Our next event was our club BBQ which saw Reg living up to his brother’s standards and being sick before having to be taken  home because he couldn’t sit on a chair without falling over!  The summer saw us playing rounders, going to balls and parties and planning for our Summer Ball. This happened on the 1st August and a good time was had by all! Especially Tash who loved playing the guitar on the stage! And somehow we managed to get a team together to play in the Rounders final the next day, although most of us were still drunk/very hungover!  Thankyou to everyone who has helped this year and good luck to next year’s officers!
