Year Report

2009 Year Report

By Becky Hurd Sadly, this year has seen the passing of our Club President, Mr George Leigh-Firbank and Mr Peter Mills, two great supporters of Wiveliscombe Young Farmers, who will be greatly missed and we take this opportunity to express our sympathy to both families.  75 Years of Wiveliscombe YFC....and what a year it’s been....Carnival season soon kicked off at Dulverton with ‘Superheroes’, shortly followed by Taunton and the theme of ‘Trick or Treat’ which saw us being presented with the ‘Best Local Entry’ prize yet again.  Carol Singing came rather too soon for the members of Wiveliscombe Parish and their generosity lead to us being able to hand a cheque over for £450 to Frenchay Intensive Care Unit, following the care a member received there earlier in the year.  The annual whist drive was, as ever, incredibly well supported with the hall absolutely packed and some club members braving a game against the professionals. Members also represented the club at the Sedgemoor Winter Fair, both at the show and the dinner, thank you to all, we realise how much effort goes into showing and everyone that took part did very well. Soon it was pantomime time (oh yes it was!) and we sang and acted our way through “Robin Hood” – perhaps the only chance to see half  a dozen of our boys in pretty purple tights! Needless to say, once again David Branfield took on the role of a dame, joined by Ed Jones; I must say this appears to be becoming somewhat of a habit! It was following the pantomime competition that James Leigh-Firbank was placed 3rd and Thea Woollatt 2nd in the West Group Member of the Year competition – congratulations to you both, an excellent result for the club. Weston wasn’t far to go but what a weekend! South West Area 2009 was a huge event for Wivey with a massive turn out. On the Sunday our boys won the rugby and go through to the National finals, well done all, a very impressive win and best of luck! County Rally was as ever a very enjoyable and amusing day with several members taking part in the stockjudging the night before and a huge turn out of handicrafts followed.  Nationals saw a Wivey influx by way of Roy, James & Will Leigh-Firbank, Neville Weir and myself getting our passports out and heading to Blackpool for a cracking weekend of Scooby Doo, pints of Baileys, jugs of ice cubes down the front of trousers, Kiss Me Quick hats, shrinking beds and who could forget the Willy Windmills at 5am – us girls are scarred for life!  Our 75th Anniversary Dinner & Dance was held at Oake Manor Golf Course with over 200 past and present members attending and our thanks go to Neil Parish for providing such an entertaining speech and I would like to especially thank Rosalyn Mills for all her help organising the evening and making it such a huge success. It was champagne all round as we toasted the next 75 years of the club and thanked all those for their hard work in keeping the club going. Rosalyn made a fantastic cake which was cut by our youngest current member, Lucy Pulsford and the most senior past member present. On the sporting front members have showed their skills in every field yet again and a massive well done goes to Neville Weir and Rodney Thorne on winning Generation Skittles.Stockjudging has been held throughout the year with a very good turn out, again thank you to all our very kind hosts, we couldn’t do it without you letting us invade your homes! Our thanks also go to our Advisory committee for their help with the disco’s we have held this year, the first on New Years Eve and the second with the theme of “Doctors and Nurses”, both very successful nights and a lot of interesting costumes! Our Advisory also helped us organise a West Group Driving Treasure Hunt which was exceptionally well attended but with some cars taking rather a long time to get back...via some woods or something apparently...! Although perhaps having road kill on the list of items to find wasn’t the best of ideas – no wildlife was safe and the smell of a half dead pheasant fluttering around in the back of the Land Rover really wasn’t too flash! Even more worryingly, one car load managed to pick up a dead lamb.....lovely! Dunster Show was another fantastic day with many members helping to steward and our thanks to Molly and Heather for putting together a brilliant Club Exhibit gaining us a 2nd place. Whilst all this was going on Ed, Mark, Thea and I were all busy representing Young Farmers in the show ring doing our bit to try and fly the Wivey flag.  Lastly we’d all like to congratulate Roy on doing a fantastic job this year as County Chairman; you’ve done us proud! So, our 75th year has been and gone, the future for Wiveliscombe Young Farmers is looking brighter than ever and all that remains to say is here’s to the next 75!
