Yeovil YFC

2009 Yearbook Report

This year has seen the club go from strength to strength with new members joining and the club getting more involved with the rest of the group. The autumn saw us attending disco’s hosted by Crewkerne YFC, Langport YFC and Ilminster YFC with a wide variety of fancy dress themes and some members making more effort than others!  After raiding Tom’s shop for pallets in the middle of Yeovil, we turned up at the Little’s farm to create our bonfire! No sooner had we created our masterpiece the heavens opened and saw farmers getting wet feet from not bringing wellies – who would have thought it?! The night ended up with fireworks falling over and going in all directions and with Craig and Tom running over hot coals after a few ciders! The next big event saw members going to the County Ball starting at the Frampton’s drinking champagne (very mature) unlike some of our members! The night was unfortunately cut short which left us waiting in the cold for the bus. Yeovil YFC then arranged their Christmas bingo which was well attended by the other clubs from the Wessex group and this was much appreciated. Our voices were on top form as we piled into cars for our annual carol singing, knocking on the doors of fellow past members friends and family who ended up paying us money to shut up and go away!Christmas also saw members enjoying a Christmas meal at the local pub. Kim’s idea of the “Secret Santa” gifts amused everyone with lots of interesting presents; Paul and Henry enjoyed their Christmas thongs and Tom and Harriet fought over who would take home the vibrator!  Hayley’s first grinding demo was seen by all at the Dorset Valentines Ball.  The ‘grinding’ has now become a regular move, having been seen to be repeated at the Three Counties Ball which left George and Henry alarmed as to what she could do with her body…! SWA was also well attended with some funny stories to tell such as Paul being hit by a bus, Tom being pushed down the stairs in a trolley and Henry “the stud” with his beer goggles. Scott and Paul made some fine looking hookers but no-one advanced for their services! We have had a packed program with many visits and guest speakers…The club meets weekly with variation between meetings, visits and talks. Some of the most popular visits were to Montgomerys Cheese, the Sedgemoor Game Farm and an Alpaca Farm which saw us rounding up alpacas in the dark! George and Caroline’s fear of heights became apparent at the visit to Pen Mill Feeds and we had fun making willow fish on a visit to the Musgrove Willow Growers. We also had a trip to Jonny Perrin’s Bio-Fuel plant which members found very interesting.  Our big money raising event of the year saw Adrian arrange a mouse racing evening. This was great fun and saw some people getting carried away bidding for mice.  For many members they attended their first rally in May, held locally by Wessex group. The day saw James and Hayley tossing their sheafs and Amanda having a good old dunk bobbing for apples. Simon and Colin raced to victory in the ATV challenge and we got 26 bodies crammed into a pig sty! The girls surprised everyone by winning the Tug of War, despite having no training, with their “pull-like-heck” attitude.  This year has seen us playing lots of hockey, with training practices being enjoyed with Langport YFC and matches against other clubs in our group. The summer has seen the sport of rounders becoming very popular within the club, although Harry seems to think it’s a ‘contact’ sport. We played dodgeball with Ilminster YFC, Wincanton YFC and Crewkerne YFC although no-one knew the rules so it didn’t last long before we retired to the pub! The annual cycle ride/pub crawl was well attended and enjoyed by everybody. Everyone took it in turns to ride Rose’s bike for her as she was too slow. The girls were pleased with the photos of them with the French aircraft engineers who were at the pub following the Air Day the previous day. A trick was played on Paul which saw him cycling another two miles across country to find a phone that wasn’t there. Oops sorry Paul! The ride was then followed by a BBQ with the traditional vodka jelly, thanks Lucy.  The end of the summer saw the enjoyable Lowland Games once again. This was very successful with the boys winning the “King of the River” trophy, the “Fastest Young Farmers team” and winning the men’s class. The girls came 3rd in the women’s class, well done to Georgia for getting across the pole and back again without falling in the river! Thanks to Claire for stepping up on the bale rolling after Princess Casey chickened out because the bale was too high!
