Williton YFC Yearbook Report 2007 ~ Laura Double
Our year started with our "New Member's Week" including a visit to Style's Ice-cream, which resulted in Bushy reversing into the sign!! Followed by a few games of ten-pin bowling and then a quiz to round off the week. It seemed to work as we had more new faces this year and a massive boost to our junior section.
Only a few weeks into the year Ben dragged along some new members to take part in the County Stockjudging - well done Ben, Tom, George and Katie for attending!
Next our club went to the National 11-a-side Mixed Hockey Finals in Coventry. We had qualified in the previous year but luckily managed to keep most of the same team for this year. We all had a fantastic time and worked really well as a team which saw us get to the final round in the tournament. In the final game our Club Chairman was savagely attacked by a player on the opposing side resulting in a broken hand! As the game went into extra-time, unfortunately we conceded a goal resulting in us coming second. We were all delighted as we were the only team at the finals that was being represented by members from just one club - Williton, Williton, Williton!
From this achievement Williton also won the County Sport Cup.
As a club in West Group we had to hold a West Group activity, we decided to hold a bingo night and although not many other clubs supported us we had a good, fun night making farmyard animal noises and tripping over chairs! Well all except for Kelly and Annabel don't think I didn't see you!!
At our annual carol singing we raised money for the First Response Unit in Williton which works with the fire brigade and provides an invaluable service to our local community. We raised £1200 for them buying them some much needed equipment. As a thank-you for this, we were invited to an open evening where they showed us around the fire-station and gave us a demonstration of the equipment we had bought for them.
Our Christmas meal was held at the Smugglers; where everyone had a very good night. I have heard that there was a drink thief around so be careful if you see a girl aged about 18 going by the name of Fenella Bennett!!
In January we attended the county round of netball and yes the weather was very, very cold! Well done to Steve who played in the rugby. Although everyone had a good time neither of us came anywhere.
A new addition to this year's schedule was the disco dancing competition. We were a little sceptical about it all but thought it would be a laugh, so as Annabel, Baker, Miss Needs and myself put together our routine and costumes we never imagined that we would actually come anywhere. As we saw ourselves win the county round, and then come second at the South-West finals we were then faced with a place in the National Finals. As we travelled to the finals we were very excited, no sorry we were bricking it! We didn't hold up much hope as there was Lucy who was veyr nervous, me with a bad back and Bell with an additional person inside her. I forgot to mention that part, in March Annabel and Chris Cottrell announced they were expecting a baby, congratulations to the new arrival in October!!
Going back to the disco dancing, we didn't come anywhere but we beat Devon this time. Some fantastic girls from Wales won who could bend their legs in directions you can only imagine!!
In February we saw the clubs battle it out in the Drama competition in Wivey, well done to everyone that took part and helped organise. I know Kelly and VJ did a lot with that so well done to them. Also well done to Keith Richards for winning Best Actor!
In March we held a skittles competition in aid of the West Group Rally 2008, well done to everyone that helped.
We saw VJ and James come second at the County Badminton Competition, well done to you guys!
This year we hosted the West Group Rally at the Sellick's farm in Stogumber. A big thank-you should go to everyone that helped including Tom, George, VJ and Ben to name a few. It was a fantastic day and the sun decided to come out in the afternoon, just in time to see you all jump in the pond! Well done to the boys who did the egg-throwing over the pond, you put the rest of West Group to shame as they couldn't even get one egg across without smashing it - I believe it was Nick, Steve and Gibbo!
With the West Group Rally out the way we ventured off towards Bristol for the County Rally which was good fun! The weather put a bit of a dampener on the whole thing but I think everyone had a good time. Well done to the Parker's for their handicraft entries, it was really good to see some new faces getting involved. The Lawnmower racing has got to be the funniest event at the rally, watching the boys get very competitive and rolling the lawnmowers was very entertaining, well done to Chris and James for our entry though!
With all the new technology available now this summer we saw Williton YFC arrive on Facebook, this has made it really easy to message each other and share pictures of all our YFC activities.
For fundraising this year we held 2 car boots and luckily the sun joined us on both occasions. We had master chefs Bush, Nick and Skid on the BBQ with security provided by George! Thank you to the Salvidge family for their support and to Tom for all your hard work. Everyone had good fun running the day and I should really learn not to throw water over Skid as next time I may actually break my nose!
A new event for this year was the club exchange. Andy and Ben Sellick organised this and the Knutsford lot welcomed us to Manchester and arranged some fun activities for everyone to take part in. Knutsford then came to visit us and got a new experience the new Watchet carnival. Everyone had a fantastic time and hopefully the weather will be better for next year!! I do have some rather incriminating photos of Mr Hawkins but I don't think it would be very fair to add them on here, but let's just say that the beer goggles must have steamed up a bit that night!!
The last few sporting events of the year included 6-a-side cricket which was held at Brompton Ralph and Beach Volleyball, which was interesting as the tide was invading our pitch and the wind was stealing our ball. Unfortunately we haven't been able to play any rounders due to foot and mouth but hopefully we will at the beginning of next year.
In early August we enterted 2 teams in the Raft Race, one team came 3rd and one 6th. It was a fantastic day with some really good team work in order to build and transport the raft as well as organise everything on the day. The pictures show how fantastic the weather was and how fetching Keith's outfit was - I just want to know where he gets all these outfits!!
With the year nearly at a close there are a few announcements during the year including the engagement of Verity Jonas and Richard Vigars (VJ and George), I wish them all the best for September 2009 when they will tie the knot!
Also in October this year there will be an addition to the Cottrell family and I wish Chris and Annabel good luck!
With another year over, I would like to wish everyone good luck in their roles for the New Year and I hope Young Farmers continues to be as successful for many years to come. It has been the base to expand our social circles and life skills and I hope that many other young people in our area will be able to benefit from it as well.
