Wiveliscombe YFC Yearbook Report 2005

What a year it has been for Wiveliscombe YFC. I'm not sure that I can shorten it at all as it will take me another year to write what we have been up to as a club. I also apologise if I mention myself too much but more about why later.

After the AGM in September we were straight in to Dulverton carnival where we entered our float SHREK!! Unfortunately James Leigh-Firbank wasn't willing to be Shrek so we had to compromise and that went to Lorna Thorne and Matt Thompson was Lady Fiona and didn't he (sorry she!) look wonderful. Everyone had a fantastic evening and preparation leading up to the event.

In the autumn we were invited to Tavistock for an exchange with the young farmers of Devon. We went along with a few from Exmoor. Tavistock were very friendly and everyone made lots of new friends. They also took us on some day trips so we could see how they farmed. Not as well as us here in West Group!

Next we had our annual whist Drive where there was record number of young players who thrashed the older players. Well done every one.

It was then time to fine tune our voices for carol singing. We sang for 3 whole nights and managed to raise a whopping £700 for CLIC this was a great achievement and for a very worthy cause within the club and surrounding Area. Oh I haven't mentioned me for a while but we're not there yet.

After Christmas and a well earned rest. (I think!!) We had the entertainments competition which we won 1St prize for tea making. Pat on our backs I think is required.

Then southwest area activities weekend was next and we all have John Brand from Exmoor to thank for keeping us entertained for both those who were there watching and for those who heard the stories he brought home to everyone. So I have been told he had a great time with the sea and a 'Jimmy hat' for more information you will need to ask him, but the weekend was enjoyed by everyone.

Wiveliscombe now had fun with the MUCKATHON in March where 15 members from the club raised a massive £2560 by spreading muck on 50 acres for 12 hours and this was achieved with time to spare. This was raised for two charities', St Margaret Somerset hospice and Conquest Riding centre for the disabled. Both these charities mean a lot to the farmer who kindly gave us her land Mrs Mary Cook. Well done to all those involved especially James Leigh-Firbank who organised this event and many others through out the year. Even the girls had a go.

There was a presentation to the charities in April to present the money and they gave a brief talk on there work as charities.

Next, at last I can talk about me!!! It was my wedding on 9th April 2005, I even got the date correct. It was a brilliant day. There was lots of drink and dancing. I can't remember what else but I ended up in the Mediterranean for my Honeymoon Cruise, and yes it was fantastic thanks for asking.

Ok back to Wiveliscombe YFC, Geoff's West Group Rally!! This was very successful day as we all got wet, and so did Geoff, That will teach you for giving us rotten potatoes.

If that wasn't enough we then travelled to Glastonbury for the county Rally the following week where Wiveliscombe had a great day and we very successful although we didn't actually win anything except the Beer Tasting competition by Matt Thomson and Roy Hayes, I do believe that this was a competition and not just in the barn for the evening.

We then hosted Tavistock Young Farmers on the return leg of the exchange with Exmoor this was a very successful and fun weekend where I think everyone got lost trying to find the Sports Man Inn but I think we are all accounted for now. We also had a Cow Boys Disco that was great fun including the delightful drinks that both chairman's had to drink!

WOOL, WOOL, wool, wool sorry SHEEP, SHEEP, sheep, sheep no sorry still got it wrong WIN, WIN, WIN, WIN. Well done to Alec Brand for wiping the floor at the Sheep shearing competitions that he took part in especially the West Group event. Well done Alec from all the club and friends. Go for it at Bath & West next year.

Dunster show was an early start but was well worth it although Exmoor did beat us in the Club exhibit competition, dam. We'll have you next time.

Stewarding and beer tent were 2 things which come to mind from Dunster show but that made the early start even more worth while. Now the Best event of the year (except my wedding of course) Wiveliscombe Field Day. Thanks to Gemma Coles and family for hosting and organising this event, I know every one had a successful and fun day. But we can't forget we actually managed to get James Wet yes he got WET, WET, WET. Well done for his good spirit.

This has now concluded the year everyone one in Wiveliscombe YFC has had a fantastic year but this has been achieved with a lot of hard work from all our comity members.

Whilst we have been having all this fun Clare Thomson has managed to fit in 2 trips to Africa this year, I think she doesn't like us or something. She has went to Kenya in the autumn and Zambia this spring on YFC scholarship. She had a fabulous time and she also gave a talk to the club about her travels once she finally came home. If any one is interested in her stories then she will gladly tell them.

We all look forward to a successful year next year and wish Matt Thompson all the best for his new ventures as he is leaving us. Let's hope that the web site will still be successful while he is spreading his wings. If anyone is interested in what Wiveliscombe has been up to we have a great website?.
