WRINGTON YFC YEARBOOK REPORT 2005
By Anna Francis
Well it all started at the beginning (as most things do!)!
The beginning being last September when I was about to get in a lovely hot bath and was interrupted by a phone-call informing me I had been voted in as the Secretary for the rowdy but lovable bunch of Wrington Young Farmers!
It only took 3 different people pleading down the phone at me -some more abrupt than others (mentioning no names Rich!!) but they did a good job! The pain in their little voices was enough!!
The first job on my agenda was informing them that despite their pleading I was going to be away for four Mondays doing some rather intriguing dance lessons but they coped very well with Chairman Alex at the helm!
We all came together in November at Brent House to celebrate Wrington's 74th year with our annual Dinner Dance which involved posh frocks and suits narrowly missing carrots, brocolli, whipped cream and anything else we found vaguely throw-able! Sally proved a dab hand at stealing mints from coffee cups only to decide they were "rank" (apparently!) so they went for a flying lesson whilst Alex was in charge of speaking on behalf of two Chairmen! We were impressed…although a little stunned to receive so many words of encouragement for the Chairman-Secretary relationship, which according to the Advisory is going on! Good to know I suppose - we thought we were single! Nic's birthday was the very next day so the more sturdy club members hung around in the bar (the staff adored us!) to drink some champagne and celebrate with her!
During the colder months the apparent "couple" had special birthdays - Alex turned 18 and I turned 21! Seems like only yesterday we were babies! Those of you who were in Weston in December and saw (or were quite possibly hit!) by a mad blonde dressed as a cheerleading stripper waving pom-poms…sorry! I was happy!
With Christmas fast-approaching some of the club descended upon the Seymour Arms for a terrific Christmas meal and plenty more food-throwing practise ahead of the 75th Dinner Dance in October. Practise makes perfect apparently! We then tortured the ear-drums of our advisory with the annual carol singing which turned into another fantastic social occasion for all as we huddled round Gill Ford's aga but we did raise £67 which we donated to the Tsunami appeal.
Christmas came and went although Boxing Day Boogie deserves a mention! Some of us dressed up and some of us just dressed (thankfully!) and a good time was had by all! Rosie and Phil were playing on the ranch, Nic found comfort with a wall (yes...a real one!) and Clare needed rescuing from a "heated discussion" in the ladies! Fun all round! Sorry to those of you who were deafened when I was accosted by a gorilla who had escaped from the Weston & Banwell zoo! Never knew he was quite that strong! Was Grace Kelly really in King Kong?! Hmmm!
January could only mean one thing for us party-animals - SNOW BALL! We all dressed up (properly this time!) and made our way to the Webbington for a night of fun and frolics (and there were plenty!). Nic being jammy had a room upstairs although she kept this fact quiet - can't think why! Could it explain the disappearances in the evening?!
South-West Area came around all too fast and a few members hit Newquay with as much power as they could muster! Sally was undoubtedly below par after screaming her heart out at Alex's daredevil over-taking techniques! Disco's fit so well between two lorries don't they Al?!
Poor Nic had some heartache so was rescued and given back to Wrington (if she wasn't poor before she was then!) and found herself in the middle of some amusing Weston & Banwell antics! Ask her - she pulls a funny face!!
A romance leapt out of SWA (on the Sunday night would you believe it?!) when Sally got herself a certain Mr Parsons from Weston & Banwell! Congrats guys - you're a fab couple!
Soon after that excitement we got dressed-up AGAIN (like to make an effort!!) for 3-Counties Ball in Bristol where the usual cocktails (both official and hand-made the Wrington way!) were enjoyed and the night seemed to end all too quickly!
May's arrival was celebrated at the Weston & Banwell Dinner Dance due to the news that I had got myself a proper job, closer to home and with far less brides (I hope!) at County Office. Celebrations were had in the usual way at a fantastic evening! Just how drunk was Nic and how long can one person talk about ostriches?! You'd be surprised by both answers! Although it wasn't ostriches Nic was hunting that night…Perrett's were more on the menu!
North Somerset Show provided a day of sun-rays for us girlies and a chance to watch Alex tugging a rope for the Weston & Banwell boys - neighbourly chairman! Although the aftermath of the show meant we saw a bit too much of Dave…lovely cleavage dear!
The next big event (eagerly anticipated by the Wrington contingent!) was the Rally! Nic and I rolled up (in the world-famous Toby!) armed with flasks of "Sex on the Beach" (although we couldn't find any sand!) so we made do with the barn where we invited ourselves behind the bar to help stock-up! Cheers to Andy Creed for babysitting us! Putting up the tent was amusing (for me not Nic! I "supervised"), as was trying to find Toby's battery, my response being "What's a battery?!" How did I pass my test again?!
The evening do meant us Wrington chicks let down our hair and had a giggle! Mark Perrett proved useful with the invention of the anti-black-eye-bra although Nic and I's weren't black merely wide with the talent hiding in that barn! We liked it so much that we "supervised" the clearing up then proceeded to talk Phil Creed to death in our tent! He stupidly asked to stay! After 1 ½ hours sleep I had everyone up at the crack of dawn for the start of a beautiful day climbing a well-known local mountain to unload the booze for the Creed boys! We can't help helping!
Bath & West proved a very wet giggle (and expensive for us shopaholics!) although Stewart from Crewkerne YFC will tell you about my tea-making skills! The floor benefitted from my tea! Pimms o-clock all round wasn't it?!
The next event, which meant posh frocks etc was Gill's wedding to Phil Durbin (Chew Valley). Our girl looked gorgeous and the day was lovely! The bar proved the main attraction in the evening for all except Nic who found my cleavage so amusing she threw bread rolls at it all evening! Just don't suck the bread first please!! Not nice to remove! Congrats to Gill and Phil - here's to the future!
A small but elite band of Wrington held a new-members BBQ at Nic's and had 2 new faces appear (they haven't joined yet!). Could it have been the BBQ that put them off?! Hmm!
Wet & Wild Weekend meant dancing the night away in the barn and generally getting up-to mischief (we do it SO well!) Nic ensured that her mechanics were checked for the next few weeks and Alex struggled to show his romantic side…worked though didn't it Al?!
Claverham Big Night Out was a similar story although this time Al chose a different girl and Nic's mechanics were given a clean-bill of health! Does anyone know who that Secretary talking to the hay-bales and running round with a jug (just the one!) was?! No?….FAB!!
Wincanton Ball had a small band of us once again boogieing! (Nic and I were just impressed that we found Wincanton…ably assisted by Toby of course!) and managed to show everyone that Wrington may be tiny but we are tough!
Nic inadvertently won us the U18's Rounders (by being the only one to turn up!) Good effort girl! Nic and I showed our support (and picnic-making skills!) for the Cricket & Rounders day and even caught some rays on Weston Beach to support the Beach volleyball, once again assisted by Toby and doggy Spikey, who dug his way through the beach! What…you didn't expect us to actually WATCH the volleyball did you?!
More ray-catching took place at the Mid-Somerset Show (thanks Nic for helping with the stockjudging!) which proved a good day for YFC.
The next night was a Car Treasure Hunt, organised by the advisory. Wrington had a good turnout from members, advisory and Polden Hills (cheers Jack and Lloyd!) where Mikey and Claire won and Nic and I (NOT Toby!) scored a record -280!! Blondes all round!
Next up saw us sunning ourselves (can see a pattern emerging here!) at the Blagdon Country Fayre in a bid to gain new members! Nic and I attracted the attentions of an amusing dying pirate who found heaven in our laps and had a bizarre relationship with a wooden tortoise although Nic preferred yoghurt in the heat!! Thanks to everyone who popped into our little stand to say hi - was nice to see you!
Lastly we attended the Wells & G Chavs & Tweeds Do (great idea guys!) and got ourselves dressed up! Yes Nic and I's dresses really WERE that short and Clare found her hands were needed to retain her dignity in the top department! Won't say much except that I continued to broaden my apparent fascination with the Wells & G boys and Nic "leant her face" to a nice boy from Exmoor and showed more than that to all on the dancefloor! No comment!
That just about brings us up to date! I bet you're all glad I'm gonna stop wittering now!
I would just like to thank Alex for being a scary-driving Chairman, Nic for being so supportive and dedicated as my punch-bag, Gill for being a real support and a fab treasurer, Katie H, Catherine Look and Simon for their support on the sidelines, Weston & Banwell for "adopting" us, the advisory for being there and for our members who come along!
Let's make next year Wrington's year guys! We've a lot to look forward to - Wrington's 75th anniversary, Nic, our new Chairman's 18th (any humiliation ideas please call me!) and for being Chavs anytime we can! Party on!!
WRINGTON YFC CELEBRATES IN STYLE!
Wrington YFC celebrated being Somerset's oldest club in style at Cadbury House, Yatton on Friday 28th October 2005.
With 225 people there, ranging from our younger teenage members to the 93 year-old founder members, the party was definitely in full swing!
Thank you to everyone who came along and supported the club so generously, £2000 profit certainly isn't bad and particular thanks must go to Shaun Pearce (Chew Valley YFC) who supported the raffle happily despite apparently being at the wrong club's do - Winscombe YFC apparently did very well too! (When Winscombe actually forms a club we'll let you all know!)
WRINGTON YFC REPORT (May 2006) ~ Anna Francis
Well - what a difference a few months makes! We are now flying high with a membership of 23, higher than it has been for many years!
We have an action-packed programme and our little diaries are swelling with the social events that we are looking forward to!
SWA was a great weekend for the club and with our bright pink t-shirts you could spot us a mile off! We looked ace and made it our business to enjoy ourselves. Despite being more local than most (about 15 mins from Weston) we happily stayed over and made it a real home-from-home!
Always up for a laugh the 3 Amigos (Clare, Nic and myself) did our best to make our presence felt at the "Bonds & Bunnies do" and had a small army of Wrington-ites let loose at 3 counties (we all behaved!) Clare deserted her shoes, much to Geoff Ware's amusement and I proved to be the most comfy seat Langport's boys had ever seen!!
We're now warming up for the Rally (with my famous big tent!!) but will be enjoying the legendary "Pimps & Prossies do" on the way!
Our new members aren't afraid to have fun which we love, Rich is going to look stunning in his hoola skirt as a prossie and just ask Phil about what he was drinking at 3 counties! Apparently they don't drink in Australia (his home country!). He's thrilled to be making a cake for the rally too!
We are currently designing our new club shirts, and have had really good offers of sponsorship so we are going to look so smart throughout the year!
We are booked into have a stand at the Blagdon Country Fayre in August again this year, no doubt the pink shirts will be back out for that!!
The rally has prompted a big response and we are planning a small invasion of Blackmore Farm. It will be great to have Wrington competing again - so everyone had better watch out! We have our resident Club-Breeder (Lisa) at home making handicrafts galore while Baby-Collins is making her fatter by the second!
Our newest Wrington member will be in the world by July 17th so good luck Lisa and Kev! You'll do a great job!
So that's about it from us - we are back in a big way and determined to put Wrington firmly on the map for many years to come! Pink-shirted and with our bouncy outlook on life I know we can achieve it!
Lastly, look out for the Wrington-sponsored page of the Rally 2007 naked calendar starring two Wrington girlies! (We know who we are!) and for all my Wrington-clan I just want to say WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEDD! You know what I mean!! X
LITTLE…WELL NOW "BIG" WRINGTON IS A BUSY OLD CLUB!! (August 2006)
WELL DONE to Wrington YFC who have raised their membership by over 500% from the rather scary 4 members last year to a booming 27 this year and are busy little bees and deserve a bit of a mention!
Cara Green and Phil McDonald have just returned from a mammoth 2 week cycle ride from Land's End to John O'Groats which saw them travel over 989 miles and gain leg muscles like steel all in the name of charity - Bristol Children's Hospital to be precise! They have raised over £3000 and we are SO proud of what they have achieved! Well done guys!
Our newly-stolen member from Bath YFC, Ben Craddock (Benjy to the girls!) has qualified to represent Somerset & Dorset Young Farmers in the British National Ploughing Championships and us Wrington girls are already planning the trip to support him in October. Go Benjy!
We also have a new member! CONGRATULATIONS to Lisa and Kevin Collins on the birth of Archie John Collins on Monday 10th July at 4.30 am. Both mum and baby are doing great and Archie is getting off on the right foot and proving he might be a big boy - he weighed 9lb 7½ oz when he was born so well done Lisa!
